End of the free and unlimited API for Google Maps, time for limits and price list

A few weeks ago Google announced that Google Translate API translator will be paid. But it is not the end of changes. Now, the company switched restrictions on the interface - Google Maps API.
Web sites and applications using each of the Maps API may at no cost generate up to:
  • 25,000 map loads per day for each API
  • 2,500 map loads per day that have been modified using the Styled Maps feature
Fortunately, Google is not as stringent limits on, like some hosting provider. If your site exceeds the specified limit, for example: because of the unexpected popularity, maps do not disappear right away. This will happen only when they will be regularly exceeded. You can greatly reduce the risk of being affected by the web service limits by using the relevant JavaScript or ActionScript class for the service concerned where appropriate.
Applications generating map load volumes below the usage limits can use the Maps API at no cost providing the application meets the requirements of the Google Maps API Terms of Service. Prices will be ranged from $4 to $10 for 1000 generated maps over the usage limits. Details can be found here.
p.s.
Remember that you can always take advantage of the alternatives like Open Street Map or MapQuest - unless of course they are also free. In addition, some companies provide maps for only one country, such as Polish targeo.pl, mapgo.pl.

Google plans to sell e-books

Washington: US internet search software giant Google plans to sell digital edition of books in late June or July, throwing the firm into a battle that already involves Amazon.com, Apple Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc.

Google has been discussing its plan for distributing books online for several years and for months has been evangelising about its new service, called Google Editions, a company official said Tuesday.
The company will allow users to access books from a broad range of websites using an array of devices, unlike rivals that are focused on proprietary devices and software, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Chris Palma, Google's manager for strategic-partner development, announced the time table for Google's plans Tuesday at a publishing- industry panel in New York.
Users will be able to buy digital copies of books they discover through its book-search service. It will also allow book retailers-even independent shops-to sell Google Editions on their own sites, giving partners the bulk of the revenue, the company said.
The company would have copies on its servers for works it strikes agreements to sell. Google is still deciding whether it will follow the model where publishers set the retail price or whether Google sets the price.
Users of Google Editions would be able to read books from a web browser-meaning that the type of e-reader device wouldn't matter. The company also could build software to optimise reading on certain devices like an iPhone or iPad but hasn't announced any specific plans, the paper said.

Apple vs. Google gets personal: "Steve Jobs simply hates Eric Schmidt" (video)

Nothing sells papers (or ads) like turning a little corporate competition into something personal. Case in point, a New York Times piece from the weekend titled "Apple's Spat With Google Is Getting Personal," that opened with this rather ominous, one-sentence paragraph:
